Fire Breaks Out Near Glasgow Central Station

“I am deeply concerned about the fire near Glasgow Central Station tonight and very grateful to all of the emergency services who are responding,” said John Swinney, expressing the gravity of the situation.

A fire erupted at approximately 3:46 PM on March 8, 2026, near Glasgow Central station, leading to significant rail disruptions. The blaze originated from a vape shop located in the Forsyth Building, which dates back to 1851 and has a history as a former department store.

Dozens of trains were cancelled as National Rail confirmed that Glasgow Central station would remain closed until further notice. Passengers were advised not to travel to or from the station due to the incident.

More than 60 firefighters were mobilised to tackle the fire, with 15 fire appliances and three high-reach vehicles deployed at the height of the emergency. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as a result of the fire.

Paul Sweeney, a local representative, remarked, “Sadly the building has now partially collapsed. I hope the fire can be contained,” highlighting the severity of the damage caused by the blaze.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service stated, “There are no reported casualties, and crews remain at the scene,” providing some reassurance amidst the unfolding crisis.

In light of the disruptions, Avanti West Coast announced, “We’re strongly advising customers not to travel to or from Glasgow Central today, Sunday 8th March,” as the situation continued to develop.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the cause of the fire, which is currently under investigation. The Forsyth Building’s partial collapse adds to the urgency of the response from emergency services.
