The 2026 season at the Somerset and Dorset Railway officially begins on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, marking a significant event for the local community in Midsomer Norton South Station.
This year’s opening will feature a range of events and experiences designed for visitors of all ages, including a special Locals’ Day on April 12, which will offer discounted access to train rides and the museum.
In addition to the railway’s offerings, the newly opened restaurant Turcuisine at Tower Park, which launched in March 2026, is set to complement the local attractions with its extensive menu. The restaurant showcases a variety of dishes, including house specials like kleftiko and meat moussaka, and operates from 12 PM to 10 PM Monday through Saturday.
Historically, the area has connections to Montague John Druitt, a barrister born on August 15, 1857, in Wimborne Minster. Druitt is a notable figure in the Jack the Ripper case, as his body was discovered floating in the Thames on New Year’s Eve in 1888, leading to a coroner’s jury concluding that he committed suicide while of unsound mind.
The infamous Jack the Ripper is believed to have murdered at least five prostitutes in 1888, a dark chapter in the history of London that continues to intrigue historians and the public alike.
As the railway season opens, the Somerset and Dorset Railway has scheduled various events throughout May, including a 1940s Home Front weekend on May 3 and 4, which promises to attract history enthusiasts and families.
