“We were all hoping to adorn the main Village Green for next Spring … but sadly the Parish Council last night rejected my plan,” said Brian May, expressing disappointment over his proposal to plant daffodils in Elstead.
The local council cited safety concerns regarding traffic sight lines as the primary reason for their decision. May, who previously donated 3,000 daffodil bulbs to the community, found it perplexing that 18-inch stalks could obstruct views. He had envisioned a vibrant display enhancing the village green — a space cherished for community events.
Last year, May’s initiative at St James’ Church resulted in unexpected bright yellow blooms due to a supply error. Despite this setback, he engaged with the community and garnered support for his floral endeavors. However, this time, the Elstead Parish Council rejected his proposal during a meeting held on April 20, 2026.
“Apparently the main objection is that the sight lines on the green will be affected for traffic,” May stated, highlighting his confusion. The council suggested alternative planting locations, which he did not accept. They acknowledged the disappointment of residents who supported his vision.
The council emphasized their duty to balance community initiatives with safety and accessibility. As a result, they must prioritize practical usage of public spaces like the village green. This decision reflects ongoing tensions between community aspirations and regulatory frameworks.
Looking ahead, May indicated he might revisit his plans for daffodil planting in the future. With 3.6 million followers on Instagram, he remains a prominent figure in advocating for community beautification.
