Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, has faced growing concerns regarding its pedestrian infrastructure, particularly the aging footbridges that were constructed in 2005. Designed with a minimum lifespan of 25 years, these structures are now showing visible signs of rusting and structural wear. Information obtained under the RTI Act has revealed significant shortcomings in their maintenance, raising alarms about pedestrian safety.
Before recent developments, the expectation was that these footbridges would continue to serve the community effectively. However, the reality is starkly different, as no load testing has been conducted since their construction, leading to fears that they may have outlived their lifespan. An anonymous official expressed concern, stating, “I’m afraid they may have outlived their lifespan. It is not without risk.”
In contrast to these infrastructural concerns, Kohima recently celebrated the dedication of the D Block Council-cum-multipurpose building on March 14, 2023. This new facility, dedicated by Dr. Neikiesalie Kire, is set to serve as a hub for social gatherings, youth and church activities, and birthday programs. Thenusou Sekhose, a local leader, remarked, “This occasion marks a very important milestone for the D Block ward,” highlighting the significance of this development for community engagement.
The juxtaposition of the new building against the backdrop of deteriorating footbridges illustrates a critical moment for Kohima. While the community gains a space for collaboration and social interaction, the unresolved issues surrounding pedestrian safety remain a pressing concern. The Kohima Municipal Council and other stakeholders, including the Assam Rifles and HDFC Bank, are now faced with the challenge of addressing these infrastructural deficiencies.
Despite the renovation works carried out on two footbridges in August 2022 under the Kohima Smart City Development Limited project, the overall maintenance of the aging structures has not been adequately addressed. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any formal timeframe or specific government policy for routine maintenance of the footbridges.
