Kyle Walker announces retirement

“I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I’ve achieved with England,” said Kyle Walker, reflecting on his international career.

Walker has officially retired from international football after earning 96 caps for the England national team. His decision comes after a notable journey that began with his senior debut against Spain in November 2011.

Throughout his career, Walker participated in five major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and 2022, as well as the UEFA EURO in 2016, 2020, and 2024. His final appearance for England was in a friendly match against Senegal in June 2025.

“To represent your country once, let alone 96 times, I’m extremely proud of that,” Walker added, highlighting the significance of his contributions to the national team.

Walker was part of the England squad that reached the UEFA EURO finals in both 2021 and 2024, marking key moments in his international career. He also scored his solitary international goal against Ukraine in September 2023.

At the age of 35, Walker expressed gratitude towards various managers who played a role in his development, including Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson, Gareth Southgate, and Thomas Tuchel. He served as vice-captain during the UEFA EURO 2024, further showcasing his leadership on the field.

“The book is now closed and it’s been a whirlwind of a journey, but one that I’ve really, really enjoyed,” Walker stated, encapsulating his feelings about his time with the national team.

Thomas Tuchel, who has been a significant figure in Walker’s career, remarked, “I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career.” This sentiment reflects the admiration and respect Walker has garnered over the years.

Walker began his journey with the England national team in 2009, progressing through the ranks from the MU19s to the senior squad. His legacy will undoubtedly be remembered by fans and teammates alike.

As Walker transitions away from international duties, the football community looks forward to seeing how he continues to contribute to the sport at the club level, currently playing for Burnley.
