microsoft outlook app android — GB news

Microsoft’s Outlook Lite app for Android, which launched in 2022, is set to be fully retired on May 25, 2026. Originally designed for low-resource phones and slower networks, Outlook Lite garnered over 10 million downloads on the Play Store by September 2024, highlighting its popularity among users with limited device capabilities.

Despite its success, Outlook Lite faced limitations, lacking integration with cloud services and enterprise features like Data Loss Prevention (DLP). Microsoft initially retired the app from the Google Play Store on October 6, 2025, blocking new users from installing it. Existing users are now urged to transition to the Outlook Mobile app before the impending shutdown.

As of May 25, 2026, Outlook Lite will cease fetching new emails, and core features will be disabled. However, users will still have access to their existing email, calendar items, and attachments by signing into Outlook Mobile. A spokesperson from Neowin emphasized, “If you do still have it, you should definitely migrate to Outlook Mobile so that you aren’t cut off in late May.”

While Outlook Lite served its purpose well for users needing a lightweight email solution, the shift towards Outlook Mobile reflects Microsoft’s broader strategy to focus on a more integrated mobile experience. The Outlook Mobile app is ad-supported and requires a Microsoft 365 Personal or Home subscription for an ad-free experience.

As the retirement date approaches, Microsoft continues to encourage users to make the switch, ensuring they remain connected without interruption. “Your Outlook account will not be affected by this shutdown, and all data on it will remain untouched,” a company representative confirmed.
