Monmouthshire receives significant funding for local development

Monmouthshire is set to receive £1.25 million in capital funding and £532,000 in revenue funding for the 2026/27 fiscal year. This funding initiative, announced by the Welsh Government, aims to bolster the local economy and create pathways to employment.

The investment will be part of the broader Local Growth Fund, which will allocate £547 million across Wales between 2026 and 2029. The funding is intended to support local jobs, skills, and businesses, with a particular focus on revitalizing vacant and underutilized sites through the GrowthSpace initiative.

As part of this effort, the Monmouthshire Skills Centre will establish a modern training hub equipped with industry-standard facilities. This facility is expected to provide essential training and employability support, particularly for young people and underrepresented groups in the community.

Cllr Paul Griffiths, the Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development in Monmouthshire County Council, emphasized the importance of this funding. He stated, “This funding is about investing in the local economy and equipping people with the tools, skills, and spaces they need to thrive.”

The council’s plan focuses on strengthening the local economy through targeted initiatives that promote inclusive economic growth. Support will be extended to food businesses, entrepreneurs, small businesses, social enterprises, and rural businesses, ensuring a comprehensive approach to economic development.

Additionally, dedicated programmes will offer clear pathways into education, training, or employment, aiming to help individuals enter the workforce and build future skills. Cllr Griffiths further noted, “From revitalising buildings to supporting local businesses and assisting residents in accessing training and opportunities, we are laying the groundwork for sustainable growth that benefits our local economy now and in the future.”

The Local Growth Fund was announced by the Welsh Government in October 2025, marking a significant commitment to economic development across Wales. The upcoming upgrades to the My Monmouthshire customer portal, set to be completed by 28th February 2026, are also part of the council’s efforts to enhance local services.

As Monmouthshire prepares for these changes, the community anticipates the positive impact of the funding and initiatives on local employment and economic resilience.
