Brighton’s Dominant First Half
Brighton began their Premier League season with a dominant 4-0 victory over Europa League winners Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium. The Seagulls took an early lead, with Maxim de Cuyper forcing an own goal from Victor Lindelof just eight minutes into the match. De Cuyper then added his own name to the scoresheet 10 minutes later, making it 2-0.
Villa‘s defence struggled to contain Brighton‘s attack. Jack Hinshelwood then scored two goals in quick succession, extending Brighton‘s lead to 4-0. The situation worsened for Aston Villa when Joao Gomes received a red card, reducing his side to 10 men before half-time. This occurred after Gomes, who had already been cautioned, kicked out at Georginio Rutter, leading to a straight red card following a VAR review.
The opening goal for Brighton came after a blind pass by Villa defender Pau Torres found De Cuyper, whose shot hit the post before deflecting in off Lindelof. Georginio Rutter then made a run behind the Villa defence to set up De Cuyper for his goal. Brighton‘s third goal saw De Cuyper‘s cross from the left knocked back by Diego Gomez for Hinshelwood to tap in. Only a minute later, Yasin Ayari dispossessed Gomes in the box, allowing Hinshelwood to score his second.
Villa’s Challenging Start to the Season
Unai Emery‘s side faced a difficult start to their campaign, capitulating after what had been a promising opening. Emiliano Buendia nearly gave Villa the lead within five minutes but missed the target. The team’s struggles were compounded by the red card for Joao Gomes, who was making his debut after recovering from an injury. Gomes was also booked earlier for waving an imaginary card at the referee and gave away possession for Brighton‘s fourth goal.
The match highlighted significant challenges for Aston Villa. Reports indicate that Ollie Watkins may be leaving the club, with links to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez‘s future is also uncertain following a move to Juventus that did not materialise and the arrival of Zion Suzuki. Villa has also seen the departures of Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne, and Ezri Konsa this summer, all described as core members of the squad.
Despite securing fourth place in the Premier League and winning the Europa League last season, this opening defeat raises questions about the team’s direction. Emery had to press Emiliano Buendía into an emergency centre-forward role due to injuries to Brian Madjo and Tammy Abraham, and Watkins‘ absence from the squad. The marquee signing, Johan Manzambi, was also not fit for the match.
Brighton’s Strong Performance and Upcoming Fixture
For Brighton, the start to the new season was highly positive. Manager Fabian Hürzeler was able to field a strong side despite losing key players during the transfer window, including defender Jan Paul van Hecke and striker Danny Welbeck. Midfielder Carlos Baleba is also reportedly set to leave. However, Luka Vuskovic, a club-record signing, made his Premier League debut at centre-back and delivered an assured performance.
The goals from De Cuyper and Hinshelwood are a welcome development as Brighton looks to compensate for Welbeck‘s output. Georginio Rutter, starting up front without a recognised striker, was central to Brighton‘s attacking play in the first half, even though he did not score himself. Hürzeler‘s tactical decisions, such as starting Olivier Boscagli at left-back to allow De Cuyper to play further up the left flank, proved effective.
Brighton‘s celebrations at the Amex Stadium reflected their strong performance. The team will now turn their attention to the Conference League play-off second leg against Tromso from Norway, scheduled for Thursday, 27 August, after a goalless draw in the first leg.
