Alonso’s Stance on Player Desire
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has emphasised the importance of players having a “desire to play” for the club. This statement comes amidst ongoing speculation surrounding the future of midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who was not included in the squad for Thursday’s Carabao Cup victory against Luton.
Alonso addressed the decision to omit Fernandez, stating that the team needs players who are in the best situation to perform. He highlighted the need to consider players who are in good form and those who might not be feeling the necessary energy to play. The manager stressed that a strong desire to play and good preparation are crucial for his squad.
Regarding Fernandez’s absence from the Luton match, Alonso confirmed that discussions took place, and a decision was made that it was better for the player not to be part of the squad. He acknowledged Fernandez as a top player.
Fernandez’s Transfer Situation
Reports suggest that Manchester City has not made any formal contact regarding a potential transfer for Argentina international Fernandez. Chelsea’s previously stated asking price of £120m for Fernandez, set in May after he expressed a wish to leave, is reportedly no longer strictly applicable. This change follows the expiry of a deadline for offers that the club had imposed on 13 August.
Chelsea reportedly believes that market valuations for players have increased, citing several recent deals in the Premier League and in Europe that have exceeded £100m. Three transfers have already surpassed this figure, with another expected to follow after Liverpool reportedly agreed a £120m deal with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola.
Should Fernandez be sold late in the transfer window, it would leave Chelsea with limited time to find a replacement. This situation could also lead to Chelsea being charged a premium by selling clubs, which is understood to be a factor that might increase the price if Manchester City were to make an offer.
The possibility of Fernandez leaving before Tuesday’s transfer deadline remains open, but only if it allows Chelsea to strengthen their squad. This suggests that the club might demand more than the previously reported £120m.
Squad Changes and Upcoming Fixtures
Alonso dismissed reports from Argentina claiming that Fernandez requested not to be involved in the game against Luton. Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory in that match, with goals coming from Danny Welbeck on his home debut and an own-goal by defender Hakeem Odoffin.
The manager also confirmed that Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra were unavailable for the Luton fixture due to recent setbacks. Alonso indicated that he did not want to take unnecessary risks with their fitness, and neither player was ready to participate. He expressed hope that Caicedo might be available for the upcoming weekend match but noted that Palestra’s situation required further assessment.
Regarding potential changes in goal, Alonso mentioned that Mike Penders, a Belgian U21 international, is part of the squad and has an opportunity to play. This follows criticism directed at Spanish international Robert Sanchez for his performance against Fulham, where he was beaten at his near post.
Alonso previously stated his intention to significantly reduce the squad size. Recent departures from the club include defender Mamadou Sarr, who joined Real Sociedad on loan, and Liam Delap, who was sold to Nottingham Forest for £50m on Thursday.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s Premier League game at home against Brighton, Alonso stated that the team needs players who are in the best condition to play. He also confirmed that new signings Danny Welbeck and Emmanuel Emegha were in contention to face Luton, while Jordan Henderson would require more time before being ready to play.
