Jones moves to Inter Milan
Inter Milan has finalised the signing of midfielder Curtis Jones from Liverpool in a deal valued at 35m euros (£30m). The agreement sees Liverpool receive a fixed fee of 30m euros (£25.7m) along with an additional 5m euros (£4.3m) in add-ons. As part of the transfer, Liverpool has also negotiated a 10% sell-on clause.
Jones, who is 25 years old, has committed to Inter with a contract extending until 2031. He expressed his enthusiasm for the move, stating, “It’s a club that I’ve wanted to join for a while now so I’m excited.” He added, “I’m a Scouse kid who came all the way through [at Liverpool] but I’m at a point now when I want to take the next step and I think this is the perfect club.”
This transfer marks the end of Jones’s 16-year association with Liverpool, having joined the club’s academy at the age of nine. He made his first-team debut in 2019 under Jurgen Klopp and went on to make 228 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals.
Liverpool’s valuation and previous offers
In June, Liverpool reportedly turned down a verbal offer of 25m euros (£21.7m) from the Serie A champions for Jones. At that time, Liverpool valued their academy graduate, who had one year remaining on his contract, at approximately £35m. More recently, Liverpool had indicated that a package similar to the £30m that Inter paid Tottenham for Djed Spence would likely lead to a deal.
Inter had previously shown interest in Jones in January, proposing a loan deal with an option for a permanent transfer, but this offer was rejected by Liverpool. Jones’s departure comes after a season where he played 49 times in all competitions but only secured 18 starts in the Premier League under Arne Slot, indicating challenges in maintaining a regular starting position in midfield.
Jones is the third English player to join Inter this summer, following the transfers of John Stones and Djed Spence. His move to Inter concludes a period at Anfield where he contributed to Liverpool’s success, including winning two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, the Club World Cup, and the FA Cup. He was also part of the squad that finished as a Champions League runner-up in 2022.
Jones’s farewell and Liverpool’s midfield considerations
In a farewell message posted on Instagram, Jones reflected on his time at Liverpool: “After 16 years, it’s time to say goodbye. This club is all I’ve ever known. I came here as a kid and I’m leaving as a man with a family of my own, which probably puts into perspective just how much of my life I’ve spent here.” He added, “Liverpool will always be a massive part of me. I came here as a kid with a dream, and I’m leaving having lived it.”
His statement also acknowledged the significant personal milestones achieved during his tenure at the club, including becoming a father. He expressed gratitude to the academy staff, managers, coaches, and all behind-the-scenes personnel, as well as his teammates and the fans for their support throughout his journey.
The departure of Jones leaves Liverpool’s head coach Andoni Iraola with decisions regarding the midfield composition. Iraola had expressed a desire to retain Jones at Anfield but also highlighted the potential for 19-year-old Trey Nyoni to step into a more prominent role this season. The club’s long-standing priority in the current transfer window has been to reinforce wide areas, with reports indicating two rejected offers for Yankuba Minteh from Brighton, the latest valued at £60m. Liverpool has also been pursuing Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, who is valued at £145m by the European champions. While Cody Gakpo is reportedly a target for Spurs, Liverpool currently does not intend to sell him.
Jones’s exit comes after he made 49 appearances during the 2025-26 campaign, which proved to be his final season at Anfield.
