Liverpool are reportedly close to securing a season-long loan deal for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo. The agreement is understood to include an option for Liverpool to make the transfer permanent next summer, should the player make a positive impression.
The move for the 27-year-old Uruguay international comes as Liverpool seeks to bolster its defensive options. The club has faced a series of setbacks in its backline, including the departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid on a free transfer earlier this summer. Additionally, injuries to key players have further highlighted the need for defensive reinforcements.
Defensive Reinforcements Needed at Anfield
The need for defensive depth at Anfield has become apparent due to several player absences. Joe Gomez is expected to miss the start of the Premier League season because of a muscular injury sustained during pre-season training. Manager Andoni Iraola indicated that Gomez‘s recovery could take several weeks, potentially around a month, making his availability for the season’s commencement unlikely.
Another defender, Jeremy Jacquet, who joined Liverpool this summer after a deal was agreed with Rennes six months prior, has also been experiencing discomfort. He has not featured in pre-season due to a minor issue, following a significant shoulder injury that kept him out since February. Iraola expressed caution regarding rushing Jacquet back into play, especially given his extended period away from competitive matches.
Furthermore, Giovanni Leoni remains sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered last September, and Conor Bradley‘s knee injury is expected to keep him out for the initial months of the 2026-27 season. These injuries, combined with Konate‘s exit, have left captain Virgil van Dijk as the primary fit senior centre-back. During the recent pre-season tour of America, Iraola had to rely on teenage centre-backs Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye, with full-back Luke Chambers also deputising in the central defensive role.
Araujo, primarily a central defender, could also provide cover at right-back, which would be beneficial given Bradley‘s injury and limited options in that position. His experience, having played for Barcelona since 2019, is seen as a valuable asset for Liverpool.
Araujo’s Career at Barcelona
Ronald Araujo joined Barcelona from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018. Since then, he has made over 200 first-team appearances for the Spanish club. He has been part of the Barcelona squad that won La Liga in three of the last four seasons. At the end of the previous season, he served as club captain and was appointed captain in January 2026 following the departure of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Despite his significant contributions, Araujo made only 11 league starts last season, with Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi often preferred as the central defensive pairing. He remains under contract with Barcelona until 2031.
Reports suggest that Araujo‘s potential move to Liverpool came about swiftly. After a meeting with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, where Araujo was informed that while he would receive playing time, he might not have a key role in the defensive system, the option of joining Liverpool emerged. The deal was reportedly finalised within a day, with Liverpool agreeing to cover the player’s wages.
This potential transfer marks Liverpool‘s second signing of the summer under Andoni Iraola, following the arrival of Spanish forward Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million earlier in the summer. Araujo is expected to join the Liverpool squad this weekend.
