Root Addresses Off-Field Conduct
England fast bowler Josh Tongue has stated that captain Joe Root’s message regarding the squad’s off-field behaviour has been fully understood by the players. Root expressed his frustration after Brydon Carse became the latest England player involved in a late-night incident. The captain addressed the squad before their training session for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday.
Tongue described the discussion as “a chat that was needed, a very good chat from Rooty.” He added that Root was very clear about the expectations of being an England cricketer and the privilege of wearing the England shirt. The aim is to inspire younger generations by demonstrating the positive aspects of playing for England in front of large crowds.
Root had previously urged his players to be “really good role models and good human beings” just last week, before the first Test of his second captaincy spell. This week, he did not conceal his disappointment over what he termed “stupid mistakes.” Tongue confirmed that Root was direct and honest with the team in the changing room, and immediately after the discussion, the team’s focus shifted entirely to the upcoming five days of cricket.
Carse Removed from Squad Amid Investigation
Brydon Carse has been removed from the England squad for the second Test following his brief arrest during a night out in Derby on Saturday. Footage of the in handcuffs, surrounded by police, circulated on social media on Sunday. Although he was de-arrested, the England and Wales Cricket Board referred the matter to the Cricket Regulator. The Regulator’s ongoing investigation led to Carse’s exclusion from the Lord’s squad.
This incident is one of several controversies involving the England men’s team over the past 10 months. Tongue himself was present during a late-night incident in Wellington where Harry Brook, the England white-ball captain, was reportedly punched by a nightclub bouncer. The Regulator took no action against Tongue for his involvement, but the paceman acknowledged that the event prompted him to reflect on his career as an England cricketer and its fragility.
Tongue expressed his desire to play for England for as long as possible and stated he has tried to move past the incident to focus on his current cricket. Carse has had previous disciplinary issues, including a ban for breaching betting rules and being sent home from a white-ball tour in the Caribbean in 2023 due to off-field conduct.
Team Focus Shifts to Lord’s Test
Despite the off-field issues, the England team is now fully focused on the second Test against Pakistan. Tongue was part of the four-pronged pace attack that secured an innings victory over Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley. A victory against Pakistan at Lord’s would mark England’s first multi-match series win since 2024.
England is currently under interim head coach Marcus Trescothick, with New Zealander Stephen Fleming set to take over from the tour of South Africa in December. Root confirmed he has been in daily communication with Fleming, and Tongue also mentioned receiving messages from the incoming coach. Fleming messaged Tongue before the first Test, congratulating him on his performance in The Hundred and wishing him luck, and also messaged him after the first day of the Test. This indicates Fleming’s close observation of the players before he officially takes charge for the South Africa series.
The hosts are expected to name an unchanged XI for the Lord’s Test.
