Goalless Draw in Norway
Brighton & Hove Albion were held to a goalless draw by Norwegian side Tromsø in the first leg of their Conference League play-off. The match took place almost 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Despite Brighton’s dominance in possession and shots, they were unable to find a breakthrough against a resilient Tromsø defence.
The Seagulls created several scoring opportunities throughout the match. Tromsø goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard made two notable diving saves in the first half, denying a low strike from Georginio Rutter and a volley from Ibrahim Osman. Yasin Ayari also forced a save from Haugaard later in the game.
Despite Brighton’s control, Tromsø had two significant chances on the counter-attack. In the second half, Heine Larsen beat an offside trap but his one-on-one effort was saved by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Later, in the 85th minute, Isak Vadebu also broke through Brighton’s high defensive line but sent his shot wide of the goal.

Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler gave a first competitive start to defender Luka Vuskovic. Vuskovic joined the club from Tottenham for a fee of £46m this summer. He had a largely quiet evening, though he received a yellow card in the second half for a shirt pull on the halfway line. Fellow summer signing Zadok Yohanna entered the game as a late substitute.
Two players linked with moves to other clubs, Carlos Baleba and Yankuba Minteh, were not part of the Brighton squad due to injury. Baleba, who has been linked with Manchester United, is recovering from an ankle injury. Minteh, a reported target for Liverpool, is dealing with a leg injury and is expected to be out for several weeks.

Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler acknowledged his team’s control of the game but noted they were “not quick enough in possession.” He praised Tromsø’s defensive effort, stating they defended well and were very compact, with many players in their box blocking shots. Hürzeler also highlighted Tromsø’s effective transition play and the performance of their goalkeeper.
Despite creating opportunities, Hürzeler stated that Brighton had to be satisfied with the draw, though it was not the desired result. He expressed anticipation for the return leg, looking forward to the opportunity to win in front of their home fans. He also indicated that there are aspects the team needs to improve against Tromsø, acknowledging them as a good football team that will require Brighton to play at their highest level.
This match marked only the second time Brighton has participated in a European competition, having reached the Europa League last 16 in 2024. The return leg against Tromsø is scheduled for next Thursday at 19:30 GMT. Before that, Brighton will play their Premier League opener at home against Aston Villa on Sunday at 14:00 BST.
Tromsø will have a seven-day rest period before travelling to England for the second leg.
