Royal Mail Stamp Prices Set to Rise
The price of a first-class stamp will increase by 10p to £1.80 from April 7, 2026, while the price of a second-class stamp will rise by 4p to 91p.
This price adjustment comes as Royal Mail faces significant scrutiny, having been fined £21 million by Ofcom for failing to meet its annual delivery targets. The last time Royal Mail met its annual target for delivering first-class post on time was in the 2019-20 fiscal year.
Since 2020, the cost of a first-class stamp has surged by 137%, while the price of a second-class stamp has increased by 40%. These increases reflect broader trends in the postal service, where the volume of letters sent has decreased dramatically, with 70% fewer letters sent than two decades ago.
In response to these challenges, Royal Mail has implemented changes to its delivery service as a pilot across 35 delivery offices. Currently, the company is only required to deliver second-class post on alternate weekdays instead of six days a week.
Anne Pardoe, a representative from the postal sector, emphasized the need for higher standards alongside these price increases, stating, “Higher prices must come with higher standards – increases should be tied to Royal Mail’s performance on the doorstep.”
Concerns about Royal Mail’s service quality have prompted parliamentary inquiries, with Miss Dodds noting, “It’s right that Royal Mail bosses have now been called to parliament to answer for shortcomings in service.” She added that many residents continue to reach out regarding ongoing issues with the postal service.
As Royal Mail navigates these changes and challenges, observers will be watching closely to see how the price adjustments impact service quality and customer satisfaction in the coming months.
