Chelsea’s Deadline for Fernandez

Despite the deadline, Maresca indicated that immediate transfer activity was unlikely. When questioned on Friday about imminent deals, he stated, “I don’t think we’re going to do something today.” However, this does not rule out future negotiations.
Chelsea has not yet received a bid from Manchester City for Fernandez. The club has communicated that if City does not meet their demands by the deadline, they do not intend to sell Fernandez during the current transfer window or the upcoming winter window. Chelsea’s rationale for imposing this deadline is to prevent distractions, aiming for new manager Xabi Alonso and his squad to concentrate on the new season.
Potential Rodri Exit and City’s Strategy
A potential move for Fernandez appears to be contingent on City selling their Spanish midfielder Rodri. Rodri has been a key player for City, contributing to their success, including their 2022-23 Treble win and scoring the decisive goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan. He has made appearances for the club, securing four league titles and multiple cups.
Rodri reportedly wishes to return to Spain and join Barcelona, with Real Madrid no longer pursuing him. Reports suggest that the deals for Rodri and Fernandez are interdependent, though they do not necessarily need to occur simultaneously. If City secures Rodri’s departure, it would enable them to make an offer for Fernandez. City has already made a significant midfield acquisition this summer, signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m.
Fernandez’s Role and Club Relations
Maresca has shown strong admiration for Fernandez, having appointed him as Chelsea captain when another player was unavailable. Fernandez played a significant number of games under Maresca during their time together at Chelsea. While naturally a defensive midfielder, Maresca often deployed him in a more advanced role last season, which led to Fernandez achieving a career-high of 15 goals.
This versatility suggests Fernandez could fit into various midfield positions within Maresca’s City squad. Anderson, like Fernandez, can operate in both defensive and more advanced midfield roles, offering Maresca tactical flexibility and the possibility of both players featuring together.
Relations between Manchester City and Chelsea are reportedly strained following Maresca’s departure from Chelsea. His exit in January was described as disruptive and unsettled some players, including Fernandez. City paid Chelsea £17m in compensation to appoint Maresca this summer. Fernandez’s relationship with Chelsea reportedly deteriorated after Maresca’s departure, and he previously expressed a desire to move to Madrid, leading to him being dropped for two matches by Chelsea. Real Madrid later released a statement denying any intention to sign Fernandez, leaving City as the primary contenders.
The actual transfer window closes on Tuesday, 1 September, at 23:00 BST. Chelsea insiders reportedly believe that if City does not make a move by Friday, the opportunity will pass, and Fernandez will remain at Chelsea until next summer. This scenario is viewed as a win-win for Chelsea, as they either retain their player or receive £120m.
If Fernandez were to join City for £120m, it would rank as the fourth-largest transfer in football history. This summer, City’s spending could exceed £250m, including the acquisitions of youngsters Pierce Charles, Jeremy Monga, Mathys Detourbet, and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli. Their total spending for 2026 could approach £350m, following earlier January signings of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi for £82.5m.
City has also seen several departures, including Bernardo Silva and John Stones on free transfers, and the sale of James Trafford to Leeds for up to £45m. Midfielder Tijjani Reijnders is also set to join Saudi Pro-League club Al-Qadsiah in a £52m deal.
Chelsea has also been active in the transfer market, with their spending surpassing £300m. This includes a club-record signing of attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52m, and right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47m. If Fernandez is sold, Chelsea’s total sales for the summer would exceed £250m.
