Obesity is emerging as a significant factor in the rising cancer rates among young adults in England, challenging previous assumptions.

A new study from the Institute of Cancer Research reveals that obesity plays a crucial role in the increasing rates of 11 types of cancer among young adults aged 20 to 49 in England. This challenges the long-held view that traditional risk factors like smoking and diet primarily drive cancer incidence.

According to the research, which analyzed national cancer registry data from 2001 to 2019, the following key points stand out:

11 types of cancer are on the rise in individuals aged 20 to 49.

Obesity is identified as a significant driver behind these increasing rates.

The cancers linked to obesity include thyroid, multiple myeloma, liver, kidney, gallbladder, colorectal, pancreatic, endometrial, oral, breast, and ovarian cancers.

Bowel cancer rates in younger women linked to BMI rose from 0.9 to 1.6 per 100,000 people.

Approximately 31,000 cancers were diagnosed in this age group in 2023.

Interestingly, smoking rates among younger adults have fallen by around two percent annually over the past two decades. Yet, despite this decline in smoking—a known risk factor—cancer rates continue to rise. Professor Montserrat García‑Closas noted that “our findings show that while cancer rates are rising in younger adults, the trends are unlikely to be explained by changes in most known behavioural risk factors.” This raises questions about what other factors may be contributing to this unsettling trend.

Further complicating matters is the observation that for nine of these eleven cancers, rates are increasing not just among younger adults but also older age groups. The overall number of cases diagnosed in individuals aged 50 to 79 reached approximately 244,000. This suggests a broader public health issue—one that transcends age demographics.

As we consider how to address this alarming rise in early-onset cancers, experts like Professor Kristian Helin emphasize the urgent need for stronger public health policies. He argues that tackling obesity across all ages—particularly among children and young people—should become a national priority. Effective interventions could slow cancer rates and prevent many cases altogether.

Still, uncertainties linger. The exact causes behind this rise remain unclear and require further investigation—this complexity complicates potential solutions. As Professor Marc Gunter pointed out, “the changes we’re seeing in cancer incidence don’t have a single cause or a simple answer.”
