Today, dubbed ‘Frantic Friday’, is expected to see approximately 3.7 million people hitting the roads. Saturday is projected to be even busier, with an estimated 4 million trips planned. This surge in travel comes despite fuel prices hovering at uncomfortable levels—currently, petrol averages 157.17 pence per litre and diesel at 189.23 pence.

According to National Highways, “Surrey Police are now on scene with traffic officers. There are currently delays of 45 minutes and 6 miles of congestion on the approach.” Sean Kimberlin from RAC remarked, “Even though fuel prices are uncomfortably high it clearly takes a lot to stop drivers taking to the roads to make the most of a bank holiday weekend.”

Officials have not provided a timeline for clearing this incident, but they expect that once traffic resumes its normal flow, many will still venture out despite potential delays.
