On April 29, 2026, Education Minister Paul Givan announced a series of significant investments in school construction projects designed to tackle urgent needs in poorly maintained schools. This announcement came during a visit to Fairview Primary School, where Givan emphasized the importance of these developments.

The plans include four major new build projects and nine enhancement projects, all set to progress to construction stage. The total capital investment exceeds £130 million for the major works over four years and just over £50 million for enhancements over three years. These figures underscore a commitment to improving educational infrastructure.

Specifically, the major works will focus on:

Enniskillen Royal Grammar School

Priory Integrated College

Dunclug College

St Malachy’s Primary School

The enhancement projects will benefit several schools including Lurgan College, Greenhaw Primary School, Antrim Primary School, Fairview Primary School, Ballyclare Primary School, Chapel Road Primary School, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School Belfast, St Bride’s Primary School in Belfast, and St Mary’s Primary School in Newtownbutler. Many of these initiatives have been in planning stages for years—indicating a long-term vision finally coming to fruition.

Givan stated that proceeding to construction stage will be “very welcome news for the schools, pupils and wider school communities concerned and for the wider construction industry.” The urgency of these projects cannot be overstated; they aim to address immediate and pressing needs through refurbishment or extension works.

Moreover, the Minister highlighted the need for increased and sustained capital investment across the Schools’ Estate. The current state of many institutions is concerning—some are in exceptionally poor condition. This investment signals a shift towards prioritizing educational environments that foster learning.

In addition to physical infrastructure improvements, there is an ongoing discussion about public legal education (PLE). The PLE Committee aims to enhance coordination and delivery of legal education resources, which are essential for empowering citizens with knowledge about their rights and responsibilities. Public legal education is increasingly recognized as a vital public good—central to cultivating an informed society.

This sequence of events matters significantly for students and educators alike. With enhanced facilities and resources, students can pursue vocational courses and higher education opportunities more effectively. The ripple effects of this investment extend beyond classrooms; they touch upon community well-being and economic growth.
