Gabriel’s Potential Departure from Manchester United
Manchester United reportedly fear that highly-rated teenage striker JJ Gabriel may sign with rivals Manchester City. Gabriel has asked to leave Manchester United, prompting concerns about his future at the club. Other European clubs, including Real Madrid, are also said to be interested in the 15-year-old.
Gabriel, who was 14 at the start of the season, won the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Year award last term and was also named United’s Under-18 Player of the Year. He made his senior debut for United in a pre-season match against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm and scored a hat-trick on his Uefa Youth League debut.
Club Efforts to Retain the Young Talent
Despite his achievements, Gabriel did not train with Michael Carrick’s squad at the end of last week, with issues reported in the relationship between the player’s family and the club. Manchester United has not given up on resolving the situation, as Gabriel is registered with the club until the end of the season. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are directly involved in discussions with Gabriel’s family, highlighting the seriousness with which the club views the matter.
Gabriel has submitted a formal notice to cancel his registration immediately, but Manchester United can challenge this request. The club’s sources have indicated uncertainty regarding the reasons for the current situation. Gabriel will turn 16 on 6 October, at which point he would be eligible to sign a scholarship agreement.
Born in London, Gabriel scored twice on his debut for United’s Under-18 side when he was 14. He was a key part of the United team that reached both the FA Youth Cup and Premier League Under-18 finals last season. This season, Gabriel moved into the club’s Premier League 2 squad, scoring in his first two games.
Manchester United has long recognised Gabriel’s talent, with one club source describing him as “the best 15-year-old in Europe.” Former interim boss Darren Fletcher also commented on his potential, stating, “The world is his oyster.” Gabriel is noted for his willingness to take on opponents and the speed of his shots, making an impact despite his slight build through his technique, balance, and quick feet.
The club has been keen to keep him, with efforts including his family attending the opening game of last season against Arsenal from the directors’ box and Gabriel meeting Sir Alex Ferguson during another visit to Old Trafford. Wilcox and Berrada were involved in discussions that persuaded Gabriel to remain at United in the summer of 2025, when he had other options available.
Uncertainty Surrounding First-Team Opportunities
The appeal of winning major youth prizes with Manchester United and a clear pathway to the first team, including senior training sessions under Ruben Amorim and later Michael Carrick, initially attracted Gabriel. There was speculation about a first-team debut last season, which could only have occurred in the FA Cup due to his age preventing him from featuring in the Premier League.
Darren Fletcher, Gabriel’s coach for the Under-18 team, chose to play him centrally rather than in his preferred wide role to maximise his natural ability. Fletcher, who was in interim charge for the FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton in January 2026, decided it was too early for Gabriel to play, and United’s defeat meant no further senior opportunities that season.
Despite being a regular presence in training, Gabriel’s involvement in United’s pre-season programme was limited. His absence from the initial trip to Helsinki for a match against Wrexham on 18 July was attributed to his return date for pre-season training. He was part of four out of five subsequent squads but played only once, for eight minutes against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on 1 August.
During his brief appearance against Atletico Madrid, Gabriel was challenged by Uruguay skipper Jose Maria Gimenez, which served as a reminder to some at United that he might not yet be physically strong enough for senior-level play. This limited action, coupled with more exposure for some of Gabriel’s long-standing academy teammates and a 45-minute senior debut for 18-year-old Tynan Thompson against Leeds at Croke Park, may have contributed to discontent.
It was still anticipated that Gabriel would become United’s youngest-ever player this autumn, possibly in the EFL Cup. However, despite a Carabao Cup third-round draw against Brighton at Old Trafford, a Champions League match against Sabah FK presented another potential debut opportunity. United were 3-0 up at half-time in that game, and Carrick used all five substitutes by 72 minutes, but Gabriel was not among them.
Due to Uefa’s registration rules, Gabriel, being 15, could only feature if named on United’s A list of players. It is unclear why this did not happen, especially as midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who will not play until January due to a knee injury, and Thompson were included in the 25-man squad. United sources were adamant that Gabriel would have played against Brighton, but this will now not occur.
If Gabriel is permitted to cancel his registration, several major European clubs are expected to compete for his signature. While FIFA’s training compensation scheme would provide some financial benefit to United, it would not match Gabriel’s potential value, and the club clearly prefers him to stay.
