Arsenal agrees deal for Ezri Konsa
Arsenal has reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of defender Ezri Konsa. The deal is valued at £51m, bringing the 28-year-old England international to the Premier League champions. Aston Villa had initially sought £60m for Konsa, but a compromise was reached between the two clubs on Thursday.
Konsa has two years remaining on his contract with Aston Villa. Arsenal‘s pursuit of a new defender comes as William Saliba is out with an extended injury and Jurrien Timber is sidelined due to a long-term groin problem. The club had also shown interest in Bayer Leverkusen‘s Jarell Quansah, but ultimately opted to move forward with Konsa, an England teammate of Quansah.
Both Konsa and Quansah share similar profiles, capable of playing at both right-back and centre-back. This versatility is a key attribute for Arsenal, who are looking to bolster their defensive options. The Gunners require a player who can cover these roles, especially given the current injury situation within the squad.
Impact on Arsenal’s squad depth
The acquisition of Konsa is expected to address Arsenal‘s need for defensive reinforcement. The team already has Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White as cover in the right-back and centre-back positions. However, Ben White has experienced a difficult injury record over the past two seasons. The importance of strong squad depth at right-back was highlighted when Mosquera had to start the Champions League final against PSG out of position, which led to him conceding a penalty.
Arsenal‘s manager, Mikel Arteta, is known for valuing players who excel in duels. Konsa demonstrated this quality last season, winning more ground duels than any other Premier League player. He significantly surpassed players like Virgil van Dijk and Gabriel, who is set to become his teammate. This statistic suggests Konsa could be a suitable fit for Arteta’s tactical approach.

Konsa’s potential role and Villa’s search for a replacement
While William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are currently injured, Konsa could find regular game time challenging once they return to full fitness. However, he could push for a starting position if either of those players experiences a dip in form. Arsenal is adopting a similar strategy in midfield, with the signing of Bruno Guimaraes. His arrival means that one of Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, or Mikel Merino will likely start on the bench, as the preferred midfield trio is expected to be Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and Guimaraes.
For Konsa to be eligible for Arsenal‘s Premier League opener against Coventry on Friday, he must be registered by midday on Thursday. If he is not registered in time for that match, his potential Premier League debut for Arsenal could be against his former club, Aston Villa, on August 31.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery had granted Konsa, along with other players who participated in the latter stages of the World Cup, an extended four-week break after the tournament. As a result, Konsa has not featured for Aston Villa in pre-season, missing both the Super Cup and a friendly match against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa is reportedly interested in Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea as a potential replacement for Konsa. Chelsea is now open to offers for Tosin, who has also attracted interest from Marseille, Benfica, and Sevilla.
Mikel Arteta has expressed the club’s ambition to become “the best club in the world.” He believes this requires the best facilities, stadium, supporters, and, crucially, the best squad and players. Arsenal enters the season as favourites to retain their Premier League title, a status reinforced by their 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield. Arteta is comfortable with this position, focusing on the desire and will of his players to improve daily. The club aims to overcome the historical challenge of defending the top-flight title, a feat Arsenal has not achieved since the 1930s.
