Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has signed a new contract with Red Bull, committing his future to the team until the end of 2030. This agreement aims to conclude speculation regarding the Dutch driver’s future, as he had previously been linked with potential moves to teams such as Mercedes or McLaren.
Verstappen’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of 2028. However, it reportedly contained clauses that would have allowed him to depart at the conclusion of the current Formula 1 season if he had chosen to do so. The announcement coincides with Verstappen’s home race this weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull
Expressing his satisfaction with the decision, Verstappen stated, “We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again.” He added that the team feels like a second family and that he has always wanted to continue his journey with them, having been with Red Bull throughout his career.
Verstappen also highlighted the team’s achievements, noting, “What we went on to achieve together has been simply lovely and we have shared many incredible moments and won four World Championships.” He emphasized his confidence in team principal Laurent Mekies, who took over in July after former boss Christian Horner was dismissed.
“Getting to work with Laurent now for over a year has also been great, I see a clear vision he has for the team,” Verstappen said. He believes that everyone at Red Bull‘s base in Milton Keynes shares the vision for the team’s future, aiming for more victories and championships.
Despite the contract extension, mechanisms remain within the deal that could allow Verstappen to leave if the team’s performance does not meet expectations. Such provisions are considered standard practice in F1 driver contracts, though specific details are not typically disclosed by teams.
Challenges and future outlook
Red Bull has faced a challenging start to the current season, which introduced new regulations for cars and engines. Verstappen’s best results this season have been two second-place finishes in the Austrian and Hungarian Grands Prix. This follows a close call last season where he came within two points of securing the world title against McLaren‘s Lando Norris.
Verstappen has openly expressed frustration with the car’s performance and the new regulations, particularly regarding the emphasis on energy management. Despite these challenges, his decision to remain with Red Bull demonstrates faith in the team’s ability to improve.
Laurent Mekies praised Verstappen’s impact, stating, “Very few partnerships in sport achieve what Max and this team have.” He described Verstappen as embodying Red Bull Racing‘s core values, including uncompromising competitiveness and relentless determination. Mekies noted that Verstappen has been fundamental to the team’s achievements and that their relationship has strengthened through successes, battles, and challenging moments.
Verstappen began his F1 career in 2015 with Red Bull‘s junior team, then known as Toro Rosso. He was promoted to the senior team after four races in 2016, immediately securing his first victory. Since then, he has accumulated 71 Grands Prix wins and four world titles, placing him third in all-time F1 history for race victories, behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.
The contract extension is seen as a significant boost for Red Bull and confirms Verstappen’s commitment to Formula 1, especially after a period where he publicly questioned the sport’s direction. The focus of the driver market may now shift to other drivers, such as Fernando Alonso.
