Garnacho’s Performance Under Scrutiny
Alejandro Garnacho has faced criticism for his recent performance during Aston Villa’s goalless draw against Hull City. The match marked Villa’s third consecutive game without a win. Former Villa and Liverpool left-back Stephen Warnock described Garnacho as “completely disinterested” during his third appearance for the club.
Garnacho, who joined Villa on loan this summer with a conditional obligation to buy, entered the match as a second-half substitute. He replaced Emiliano Buendia for the final 15 minutes, plus stoppage time, as Villa sought their first victory of the season. During his time on the pitch, the Argentina international did not register a single shot, create a chance, or complete a cross, making only nine passes.
Warnock, speaking on co-commentary, suggested that Garnacho and Tammy Abraham, who also came on as a substitute, made no impact. He stated, “You may as well take off Alejandro Garnacho and Tammy Abraham. They have done nothing since they have come on the pitch. Garnacho going down. He looks completely disinterested. Unai Emery will be furious with his changes.”
Emery’s Perspective and Squad Dynamics
Villa manager Unai Emery has indicated that Garnacho is still in a period of adaptation. Emery noted that other new players also need to adjust to the team’s training and match demands, placing Garnacho in this category. He emphasised the need for these players to perform and contribute.
Emery contrasted Garnacho’s situation with that of teenager George Hemmings, who has been a standout performer for Villa. Hemmings has kept Garnacho out of the starting lineup for the first three Premier League matches of the campaign. Emery praised Hemmings, stating, “George, he worked last year the whole year with us and played minutes. He is performing fantastic and getting better. He created one assist for Buendia. He is working in the intensity and kilometres we need. He is doing it. I think he is a player now, clearly, to be in the Premier League.”
Garnacho’s move to Villa followed a challenging period. He departed Manchester United last summer after making 144 first-team appearances and scoring 26 times. He then joined Chelsea in a £40 million deal, where he endured a difficult debut season in west London. This led to Chelsea allowing him to move on, with Villa securing his services in July.
Attitude and Opportunity
Concerns about Garnacho’s attitude have been raised, with some suggesting he appeared disinterested even before his substitution. During the first half against Hull, while on the bench, Garnacho was observed wearing six earrings, including diamond hoops. This display was interpreted by some as an indication of a player not fully focused or ready to contribute.
Reports from his time at Manchester United academy also highlighted past warnings regarding his attitude, resilience, and determination. Former academy head Nicky Butt reportedly commented that Garnacho “had a high opinion of himself… he got above his station way too quick.”
Despite these observations, Garnacho expressed a desire to regain his confidence upon joining Villa. He stated, “I was looking for a club to get my confidence back, so I can try to become the player I was a few years ago in my first years at Manchester United. I spoke with the manager and he gave me the confidence to try to help the team here – that’s why I’m here.” However, his recent performances and perceived demeanour continue to draw scrutiny.
Garnacho has made three substitute appearances for Villa this season, with his contributions remaining limited.
